Freelance Platform Fees for Clients: What You Really Pay
Short answer
Clients pay least on job boards, where a listing costs nothing or a flat monthly fee and no commission is taken. Marketplaces charge per payment: Upwork's client marketplace fee was 5 percent on Basic and 10 percent on Business Plus in 2026, plus up to $14.99 per new contract on Basic. Staffing agencies cost most but handle screening and contracts.
Most comparisons of freelance sites rank them by how many freelancers they list. That number tells you almost nothing about what you’ll pay. The question that decides cost is simpler: does the money go through the platform, or straight to the freelancer?
Everything else follows from that. Who invoices, who charges a percentage, what happens if a job goes wrong, and whether you can rehire the same person later without paying a toll.
Three business models
Job boards are classified ads for projects. You post, people apply, and you contract directly. The board makes money from listings or subscriptions, so its fee has nothing to do with how big your project is. freelancermap in Germany, Austria and Switzerland works this way, as do remote job boards that accept contract roles.
Marketplaces such as Upwork, Fiverr and Malt process payments themselves. They take a cut, usually from both sides. In exchange you get reviews tied to real jobs, escrow and a dispute process.
Staffing agencies and vetted networks find candidates for you, screen them and often become the contracting party. Their margin is built into the hourly rate you see and is rarely disclosed.

What the main platforms charge clients
These are the terms as of autumn 2026. Platforms change pricing often, Upwork has reworked its model several times, so check the checkout page before you set a budget.
| Platform | Model | Client cost | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Upwork | marketplace | 5% marketplace fee (Basic), 10% (Business Plus), plus $0.99 to $14.99 per new contract on Basic | lower rates for eligible US clients paying by bank account |
| Fiverr | marketplace | service fee added to each order, shown at checkout | sellers pay a commission on their earnings |
| Malt | marketplace | commission billed through the platform invoice | French platform, active across Europe |
| freelancermap | job board | €0, €59 or €89 a month depending on plan | no placement fee, featured listing from €99 |
| Staffing agencies | agency | margin inside the hourly rate | screening and contract included |
The Upwork figures follow Upwork’s own help centre as of 2026; confirm them on Upwork’s pricing page before you commit. Upwork also charges freelancers a variable service fee of 0 to 15 percent per contract. You never see that line, but a freelancer quoting $80 an hour on Upwork has usually priced it in.
On freelancermap, the free plan allows two new projects a month. Contact details for all freelancers and up to 2,000 contact requests a month come with the €59 Business plan. Its homepage says more than 280,000 freelancers are registered. Its pricing page for companies lists the details.
Worked example: one project, two routes
Say you hire a developer for three months, with a total budget of $20,000. The figures below are a model based on the fees in the table, not quotes.
- Upwork: 5% marketplace fee on $20,000
- $1,000.00
- Upwork: contract initiation fee (maximum)
- $14.99
- Job board: 3 × €59 subscription
- about $204
- Difference in favour of the job board
- about $811
Assumes one contract on Upwork Basic at 5% and a three-month job board subscription at €59 a month (about $68). Freelancer-side fees excluded.
That looks like an easy win, and on pure fees it is. But the job board gives you no escrow, no dispute process and no history of completed jobs. For a first project with a stranger in a different country, $800 for that safety net can be money well spent. For a six-month contract with someone a colleague recommended, it rarely is.
How many applicants to expect
freelancermap analysed the 100 most popular projects on its platform for the Freelancer-Kompass 2026. They drew eleven applications on average. Those were the most-clicked projects, so treat eleven as a good result rather than the norm.
Two other figures from the same analysis are useful. 68 percent of those popular projects were in web and software development, and 94 percent were advertised as fully remote. On global marketplaces you’ll usually get more applications and a wider spread in quality, which means more sorting.
Which model for which job
- Small, self-contained tasks up to a few thousand dollars, a logo, a bug fix, landing page copy: marketplace. The fee is small in absolute terms, and escrow protects you.
- Multi-month projects with a defined team: job board or direct hire. The fee doesn’t scale with the budget.
- Corporate environments with approved-supplier lists: agency. Expensive, but often the only route through procurement.
- Rare specialists: no single platform. Combine a board, direct outreach and referrals, as described in how to find a freelancer.
Three things platforms won’t tell you
They don’t change your legal position. Whether a contractor is really an employee depends on how they work, not on which website brokered the deal. The IRS looks at behavioural and financial control, the UK has IR35, Germany has its own test. If you hire in Germany, read our guide to false self-employment in Germany.
Standard marketplace terms may not give you the rights you need. For code or design that becomes part of your product, put the transfer of copyright or usage rights in writing, as explained in who owns the copyright when you hire a freelancer.
Ratings are compressed. A mediocre score hurts a freelancer badly on a marketplace, and clients know it, so criticism tends to go into a private message instead of the public review. A 4.9 average barely separates good from excellent. Our guide on how to vet a freelancer covers what to check instead.
When no platform is the answer
Some projects aren’t a platform question at all. If you need software that will need development and hosting for years, you’re not looking for one profile but for a team that owns the whole thing. Booking a free first consultation with a studio such as OnlineBuilders is one way to test that before you post four separate jobs.
Otherwise, decide first whether you want the money to flow through a platform. Then pick two platforms with that model, post the same brief on both and compare the applications after a week. The brief does more work than the platform, so start with our template for writing a freelance job post.
Questions people ask
Which freelance platform has the lowest fees for clients?
Job boards that only connect you, such as freelancermap in the German-speaking market, charge clients a flat fee or nothing and take no cut of the project. Among marketplaces, the effective cost depends on your plan and payment method, so compare the checkout total, not the headline percentage.
Do I pay the freelancer's platform fee as well?
Not directly, but usually indirectly. Upwork charges freelancers a variable service fee of 0 to 15 percent per contract, and experienced freelancers build it into their rate. Fiverr also takes a commission from sellers, which shows up in gig prices.
Can I move a freelancer off the platform after the first project?
On job boards that is the norm, since the contract is direct anyway. Marketplaces such as Upwork prohibit taking relationships that started there off-platform for a set period and may offer a paid opt-out. Read the current terms before you suggest it.
Do platform fees include VAT?
Usually not. Inside the EU and the UK, a business buying services from a provider in another country normally accounts for VAT itself under the reverse charge. Make sure your VAT number is saved in the platform account so invoices are issued correctly.
